Sometimes things happen that affect the way we see the world, the way we treat people, and the way we think about ourselves. This can happen to anyone. Sometimes, when life knocks you down, it can be tough getting back up. I help people get up. I currently specialize in relationship counseling not limited to intimate partner relationships, but also everyday interactions i.e., working, organizational, non-traditional, casual, mutually beneficial, and structural. I commonly assist with communication which is a major underlying issue found within relationship dysfunction. My preferred methodologies for treatment are Gestalt therapy, Autogenic Training, CBT, Existential Therapy, and grief counseling. My strengths lie in understanding, compassion, mutual respect, and experience. I am able to channel levels of comprehension in the following areas: Abandonment, depression, low self-esteem, jealousy, forgiveness, lack of trust, relationship strain, and everyday challenges. Other areas of proficiency include coping with life changes, communication problems, divorce and separation, emptiness, and intimacy-related issues.

As a counselor, my professional identity is one of authenticity, curiosity, and empathy. I care deeply about helping my clients improve their lives. I believe that starts with the two of us forming a genuine connection so that I can best understand your personality, your worldview, and the problems you are facing – the world can be a tough place and we all have times when we could use someone to listen and understand us. I will repeatedly check in with you to assess your goals for therapy and make sure that we are making progress towards meeting those goals. In our sessions, I will use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you identify and reduce the types of thinking that can lead to negative emotions. I will also incorporate other techniques such as mindfulness meditation that many clients find useful. Together, we will work as a team to confront the issues that are troubling you. I received my BS in Biology from Duke University and my MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands. I've also been a research assistant in Princeton University's departments of social psychology and neuroscience. I try to stay up to date with current research and use only empirically validated modalities with my clients.

I offer individual, partners/couples (including polyamorous partners), and family counseling, in addition to letter of support services for gender transition, for anyone age 13+. My primary focus areas are exploring & supporting identity development (racial identities, LGBTQ+ identities, etc), developing healthy relationships, improving communication, processing trauma, understanding family dynamics, & resolving conflicts. I am open to working with anyone who thinks they would be a good fit, but in general, I tend to be process-oriented, often focusing on how different dynamics impact clients’ experiences. I most value building trusting relationships with my clients and strive to offer a nonjudgemental listening space. Exhausted by your loud inner critic? Overwhelmed by your neverending to-do list? Or maybe you're a slave to your grades? Despite looking like you have your sh!t together, internally you feel like a scattered fraud cosplaying as a human. Trying to be the perfect friend, perfect student, or perfect partner all at once is exhausting. There's a deeper wound that hasn't healed yet. Perhaps you dream of feeling fulfilled, calm, & confident? To say "no" and actually mean it? To stop playing small & launch that creative idea? If you want to stress less & live authentically without fear or guilt, I’d love to help you step into your power. I love working with creative women and gender expansive folks who have silenced themselves to make others comfortable. They are wanting to rediscover their voice, reclaim their power, be true to themselves while caring less about what others think about them. I’m proudly a human first, clinical psychologist second. I’m a connoisseur of many paradoxical things, from downtempo electronica to heavy metal. I love my tea dark, just like my humor. As a recovering perfectionist with ADHD, I know the struggle of imposter syndrome & the fear of “not being enough.” I can help you feel confident while giving the middle finger to perfectionism, people-pleasing, and self-doubt. I use a holistic approach & teach you skills to regulate your nervous system. I specialize in mindful hypnosis, EMDR, & IFS. I liberally use creativity & humor to create a supportive space for you to learn new skills, re-discover your strengths, & overcome life’s stressors with courage. If you’re secretly a rebel underneath all that people pleasing, perfectionism, and “good” behavior, you’re my kind of vibe. Please email me on my website to connect, voicemails are my nemesis!

Let me ask you a few questions. Let me know if any of this applies to you. Do you often find yourself feeling tired, stressed out, overwhelmed at work, unable to focus, or constantly feeling you need a break? How about this, when you finally take a break or vacation you notice that you don't enjoy the time away because there is a laundry list of things  you feel you should be doing or need to get done before you can relax? Have you found that you have a hard time getting to sleep or staying asleep because you are thinking or worrying about any and everything when you just need to get some rest? IF any of this is you, when would you like to get started working with me?

Hi! I'm Cristina Snipes of Under the Willow Counseling, located in Raleigh, NC. I've been a therapist for about 15 years and really enjoy working with students. I believe that therapy at it's best is done as a team, so my goal is to provide a supportive, relaxed and comfortable environment, while also guiding (and sometimes nudging!) you through the therapeutic process. By offering kind and compassionate care every step of the way, I will ease the daunting process of beginning and continuing individual therapy, hopefully meeting the end goals you're looking for. Please feel free to reach out with any questions. I'd be happy to chat over the phone prior to scheduling an appointment. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Working with me means gaining practical coping skills and tools you can start using right away. I rely on my background in psychology to implement cognitive and behavioral changes. I use scientifically supported methods like CBT, DBT, exposure, and mindfulness skills to create real, lasting changes. Our sessions will go beyond exploration and reflection — therapy with me is not 'just talking.' It feels great to vent, but it feels even better to have a path forward. I will gently confront and challenge you when I notice you might be holding yourself back. We all have a tendency to lean into old patterns and unproductive coping skills, especially when it’s all you know. I’m here to hold you accountable and help you grow in a supportive, respectful, and nonjudgmental way.
