Therapists for college students near New York University
I specialize in supporting young adults and college students struggling with trauma, C-PTSD, interpersonal concerns, and anxiety. I find having a deep understanding of your own story helps you to feel more secure in your identity, equipped to face your challenges, and grounded in your life. Getting to know your story in all its messy, beautiful, and complicated parts is where our therapeutic relationship will begin. I utilize an integrative approach to counseling using Internal Family Systems Theory (IFS), Person-Centered, Realtional, Psychodynamic, & Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Based on how our relationship develops, I will pull from these theories to best support our work together depending on your needs. Through these modalities, we can help you stand authentically in your story, in all of its parts, and feel empowered in continuing it. Sharing your life with a stranger can feel vulnerable, risky, and uncertain. My goal is to help you feel, heard, seen, and empowered in the counseling space so that I can meet you where you are and help you attain your goals.
I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) who is based in New York and passionate about helping others. I specialize in working with college students and adults from all backgrounds navigating a range of challenges including anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, relationship concerns, trauma, school/career concerns, and more.
Let's address your anxiety and high stress, or improve low energy and motivation while you achieve your goals. I support and hold space for my clients as they find balance between mental wellness and their busy lives. Life's unexpected transitions can leave you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and disconnected from yourself. Whether you're facing a change you didn't choose or sensing that something needs to shift, you might feel burdened by fears about the future, isolated in your experience, or simply unlike yourself. If you're ready to feel less alone in this and more emotionally grounded, I'd be honored to support you.
Are you finding it difficult to cope with your overthinking, negative feelings, and anxious thoughts? Do your negative feelings associate with your appearance, self-worth, or accomplishments? Does it sound like “I’m not good enough, I will never succeed, I’ll always be alone, I hate the way I look, No one cares about me”? Do your anxious thoughts manifest in difficulty sleeping, working, or socializing? Do you feel you need a place for someone to hear you, see you, and validate your experience? Would you like to acquire coping skills for anxiety regarding your relationships, your career, or communication? I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Person-Centered Therapy to help adults overcome negative self-talk, life transitions, relationship issues, and imposter syndrome and achieve an increased understanding of feelings, emotions, relationships, communication, and self-worth. I aim to create a collaborative environment within our therapy sessions because I believe you, as the client, have the ability to understand yourself and your concerns and you may just need some assistance in building the tools to manage and overcome them. Together, we will figure out how to build a relationship that will support you in the way that you need.
My goal is to build a strong alliance with you in a safe and supportive environment, ensuring meaningful positive therapeutic outcomes. Together, we will identify and address unhelpful thought and behavior patterns, as well as explore challenges and hindrances, to help you function at your full potential. I work closely with you to tailor treatment to your unique needs, using a collaborative approach. I draw from various therapeutic modalities, with a primary focus on CBT. I take an active, culturally sensitive approach in practice, equipping you with skills and practical tools to help you maintain the benefits of therapy beyond our sessions. I have widespread experience working with a diverse population and a variety of disorders including depression, anxiety disorders, relationship and adjustment issues, PTSD, ADHD and OCD. Taking the step to seek therapy can feel daunting, but we will work together to help you feel better. I offer virtual sessions and invite you to reach out for a free 15-minute consultation. Let’s be honest, going to therapy can be a little intimidating. I know what you are thinking, “what would speaking to a shrink do for me? I have so much on my mind, it will take more than a few sessions to unleash everything.” Well…I got time AND passion. I believe that as human beings living in our present society, we are conditioned to put our needs aside and we frequently forget how to take care of ourselves. As your therapist, I am strongly devoted to assisting you in tackling life challenges, managing problems, and coming out stronger than ever because YOU are capable. My approach to therapy is to use a strength based perspective, CBT and create an unapologetic space for my client. I want my client to feel they don't need to sugar coat anything in sessions because I truly believe transparency will open up my client's full potential to self-discovery and personal growth. I know taking this next step is scary AND brave. Imagine yourself opening up to possibilities you only dreamt of and finally being in control over your life and happiness. Let's work together to build that dream by tackling those negative thought distortions and create new perspectives in order to create your new reality.
Kelly Solis is a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York. She has more than 10 years of experience working in the social service and behavioral health field. Throughout her career, Kelly has worked with various populations in a number of different settings. Currently, Kelly provides individual psychotherapy to adults who are struggling with symptoms of depression, anxiety and panic, grief, or stress. Many of Kelly's clients experience feelings of sadness and low mood, sleep difficulties, low energy, trouble with concentration; as well as, feelings of anxiousness and worry, difficulty relaxing, and feelings of restlessness. She also provides support to those experiencing difficulty coping with life transitions, loss, relationship issues/conflict, work stress, and trauma. Kelly takes pride in meeting clients where they are and fosters a space where clients feel heard, safe, and where judgement does not exist. During the intake, Kelly will utilize that visit to gather information to understand the client's history and set goals together. She may assign homework which can help clients become more insightful as they move through the therapeutic process. Clients often leave sessions feeling relieved, understood, and overtime notice a reduction in symptoms. Whether it's your first time pursuing therapy or you're familiar with the process, it's important to choose someone who is a good fit and that meets your needs. Everyone deserves to have a space where they can be their authentic selves, express their feelings, receive unbiased feedback, and where they feel supported. I understand personally how challenging it can be dealing with stress, depression, anxiety and other life issues, which helps me relate with clients on a deeper level. There's a life saying that I love which is "Grow through what you go through." If you are in need of support or looking to foster change and growth, please feel free to contact me for a free phone consultation.
Welcome to your therapy journey, or welcome back! Now that you’re here, what do you discuss? How do you begin that conversation about mental health and wellness? Do you have a sense that people don’t get you? Do you travel a different path than everybody else? Are you living your life very differently from what other people expect you to? Do people tell you that sometimes you are thinking way outside the box? Are your parents different from you and do they want you to be someone else? Life can be tough when you feel different. Different can also mean isolated, lonely, and misunderstood. It can also mean constantly asking yourself: Will I ever fit in? Can anybody understand me? Why can’t people accept me for who I am? Am I doing the right thing? Will I be happy? That’s what I can help you with. BE DIFFERENT AND STILL FIT IN. The therapist-client relationship is a collaborative one, where you are an expert on yourself and we work together towards your goals. I believe that you should be satisfied with the services you are receiving and thus I frequently assess the clients' progress and satisfaction with my services during the duration of therapy. I strive to tailor therapy to best fit your needs. My approach to working with clients is practical and straightforward, yet warm, genuine, and supportive.
You don't have to figure it all out on your own! Students I work with are empathic and intelligent and are feeling pain about their personal lives and the world at large. They have difficulty asking for help as they are often the person others turn to for assistance. Distress can show up as failing classes, procrastination, insomnia, sadness, lack of focus, irritability, anxiety and feelings of hopelessness about the future. In our work together, we will identify sources of distress, resolve conflicts that are holding you stuck, and learn, practice and integrate coping strategies. We will tap into inner resources--including intuition, humor, beauty and resilience--to access healing and joy. Our work will enable you to become more grounded, self-aware, confident, and self-directed. I studied English and Environmental Studies at SUNY Albany and Williams College. I received my Masters in Expressive Therapies from Lesley University and my Masters in Social Work from New York University. My professional experience includes over 15 years working in academia, including serving as the director of a university women's and gender resource center, adjunct professor and academic advisor, in addition to my work as a psychotherapist. I am a member of the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America and am a climate-aware and trauma-informed therapist. Many of my current clients are dealing with trauma and social anxiety. They often feel isolated and struggle with initiating and building healthy connections and friendships with others. Therapy can help you uncover choices and social skills you may not even be able to imagine now. My studies in creative arts therapies, mythology, Tarot, dreams and archetypes help you see your life stories with fresh perspective and flexibility. Students who work best with me approach therapy as partnering with a warm, compassionate, knowledgeable guide who can help them access intuitive, academic, physical and practical resources. We weave together a unique net of strategies that you can tap into as needed for coping with obstacles and stressors in your life.

I’m a queer Black femme therapist who believes you are the expert of your own experience. I’m here to walk alongside you with warmth, curiosity, and care, while offering a space where all of you is welcome, including the parts that may feel heavy, hidden, or hard to hold. My approach is collaborative, nonjudgmental, sex-positive, and deeply affirming of trans folks and queer people of color. I believe healing happens in connection, and I strive to co-create a space where you feel seen, respected, and supported exactly as you are. My work is rooted in psychodynamic and relational therapy, with elements of mindfulness, CBT, and narrative therapy woven in to meet your unique needs. I show up with empathy, presence, and care. I’ll also gently challenge you and ask questions that invite reflection and growth. I don’t believe in “fixing” people. Instead, I see therapy as a collaborative process where we explore together, honor your truth, and build something meaningful in relationship. I believe healing happens when we both bring our full, authentic selves into the room. We’ll talk about heavy things, but that doesn’t mean it always has to feel heavy.
Learning how to navigate life as a young adult is hard! You are trying to balance the demands of work or school, family, and friends, all while figuring out who you are and who you want to be. As a driven and successful individual, you may put a lot of pressure on yourself and feel constrained by your own expectations. This can lead to constant self-doubt and feeling like you're always reaching for an unattainable (or unrealistic) goal. You may be overextending yourself to others, and not focusing on yourself. Perhaps you have negative thought patterns or behaviors that are causing discomfort or you don't always understand your reactions. Virtual therapy can help. Let's work together to discover the barriers that are keeping you from finding balance in your life - taking care of yourself and setting boundaries is not selfish!
